Moving Oriental Rugs
Oriental rugs are some of the most beautiful and intricately designed rugs on the market, and they can be a real statement piece in any room. However, there are a few things you need to know before you move your rug so that it arrives at your new home safely and intact.
Below, we’ve shared some tips and tricks for moving your oriental rug safely and efficiently. We’ve also covered what not to do so that you can avoid damaging your precious rug!
Tips and Tricks for Moving Your Oriental Rug Safely and Efficiently
Clean Your Rug
Before you even think about moving your rug, make sure it’s clean. This means getting rid of all the dirt, dust, and debris built up over time. A good way is to use a vacuum cleaner with a beater bar or brush attachment.
Flip the Rug Upside Down
This is probably the most important step for moving an oriental rug. By flipping the rug upside down, you’re redistributing the weight so that there’s less stress on any one part of the rug. This will help to prevent any damage during transit.
Roll the Rug Up
After you’ve flipped the rug upside down, it’s time to roll it up. Make sure to roll it tightly so that there’s as little stress on the fabric as possible. You may also want to use some packing tape or rope to keep it tightly rolled together.
Pack It Up!
Now it’s time to pack your rug up for transit. You’ll need a large, sturdy cardboard box, packing paper or bubble wrap, tape, and scissors. If your rug is particularly large or heavy, you may also need a rope or bungee cords. Here are the steps to follow:
- Measure your rug and mark its dimensions on a cardboard box. Use a permanent marker so the markings won't fade.
- Cut the cardboard to the size of your rug, making sure to leave an extra inch or two on all sides for padding.
- Wrap your rug in bubble wrap or foam peanuts, making sure to cover every surface.
- Tape the wrapped rug securely to the inside of the cardboard box.
- Label the outside of the box with your name, address, and contact information.
- Transport the box to your new home! If you're moving your rug long distance, you may want to consider using a shipping crate. This will provide extra protection for your rug during transit.
What Not to Do When Moving an Oriental Rug
While there are plenty of things you can do to move an oriental rug safely, there are also a few things you should avoid at all costs. Here are a few of them:
- Don't try to move the rug yourself – it's bulky and heavy and can be difficult to handle on your own.
- Don't pack the rug in plastic wrap or any other type of airtight packaging – this will cause the fabric to warp.
- Don't fold the rug. Folding an oriental rug can cause serious damage to the rug.
- Don't transport your rug in a cardboard box that's not specifically designed for rugs.
- Don't try to move the rug if it's wet. The water could damage the fabric or warp the wood underneath. Instead, wait until the rug has dried completely before attempting to move it.
- Don't leave the rug in the sun. The sun can cause serious damage to an oriental rug, so avoid leaving it in direct sunlight for extended periods.
- Don't use newspapers to wrap your rug - the ink from the newspapers will transfer onto the fabric and damage it.
- Don't stack other heavy items on top of your rug - this can damage the fabric and cause it to lose its shape.
- Don't store your rug in a damp or humid place. This can cause the rug to mildew and rot over time.
- Don't use harsh chemicals or cleaning products on your rug. These could damage the fibers and colors in the rug.
